About Dr. Annika Thies
I am a research associate at the Thünen Institute for Market Analysis, in Braunschweig. My research interests are in meat consumption patterns and food loss and waste. I gained a BA degree in Agribusiness from the University in Göttingen in 2015 and received a MA degree in Agribusiness in 2018. Following the Master’s program, I started a PhD in the PhD Program for Agricultural Sciences (PAG) in Göttingen. I published my cumulative doctoral thesis entitled "Measuring meat consumption with recommendations towards more sustainability" in 2023.
In the course of receiving an award of the German Meat Industry in 2021, the German Engineering Research and Development Center (LSTME) supported me to pursue a research project in Busan, South Korea from August to September 2022, which aimed to analyze the export potential for German animal welfare meat.
I am currently working at the Colorado State University in Fort Collins, USA. As part of a postdoctoral project I am analyzing consumer preferences for beef color in order reduce food waste at the US retail stage. This project is funded by the DAAD as part of a post-doctoral scholarship. I also received the international DLG prize for my research at CSU this year.
